Unusual Mercy

In 1943, a United States B-17 bomber known as the Ye Olde Pub was part of an attack on a Nazi fighter plane factory deep into Germany. In the process the Ye Olde Pub was crippled and most of the crew was severely injured. Bailing out of the bomber wasn’t an option. Due to mechanical issues, the bomber was left alone and defenseless. A German fighter came up to deal with this limping vehicle but didn’t shoot them down. Instead, the German pilot attempted to guide them out of Germany at great personal risk. This 40-page illustrated non-fiction narrative details the individual, real-world consequences of World War II. It also highlights the compassion of a German combatant whose country was known for its brutality and disregard for humanity.
